Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse appointed Vice President of ICASL for 2010/2011 We are delighted to announce that Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse, Managing Partner of BDO Partners has been appointed as the Vice President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. This appointment is a great honour for the firm. A ceremony was held on the 21st of December 2009 to honour him by the Partners and staff and to share the joy of this momentous occasion. The firm wishes him all the very best in his future endeavors. Young Chartered Accountants Forum Mr. Tishan Subhasinghe, Partner BDO Partbers was appointed as the Treasurer of the Inaugural Young Chartered Accountants' Forum. This forum was launched at the ICASL auditorium on 8th of December 2009. With the launch of the YCA forum, the shouldering of new responsibilities and bringing solutions to problems and developing young members abilities and entrepreneurial skills will be taken into account and will be addressed. BDO Burah Hathy to change its Name to “BDO Partners” BDO, the world’s fifth largest accountancy network, has announced that all its member firms in 110 countries worldwide are adopting the single global trading name of ‘BDO’. Sujeewa Rajapakse, Managing Partner of BDO Partners the local member firm in Sri Lanka said that BDO Burah Hathy will change its name to BDO Partners from 1 January 2010. Jeremy Newman, CEO of BDO said: “This is a very exciting change for BDO and is the culmination of many years of strategic and operational investment and engagement. It demonstrates our member firms’ commitment to provide a seamless, integrated service delivering the highest quality advice to all our clients across the world. It confirms our position as a competitor to not only the largest, but all other businesses operating in our marketplace”. The change also sees BDO entering into arrangements to enable all BDO Member Firms to utilise common IT software which should facilitate the deployment of new network-wide tools and applications. This will benefit clients as it will enable easier document and knowledge sharing. BDO will be introducing a new audit methodology and a new audit process tool to facilitate the consistent delivery of high quality, effective and efficient audits, fully compliant with the International Standards on Auditing (ISAs). Change in Partners at BDO Partners In accordance with the wishes of our senior partner Mr. V. Sinnadorai, FCA, we wish to inform that he has retired from the partnership with effect from 30th September, 2009. He is a pioneer in the commencement and improvement of Sri Lankan public accounting firms, an expert financial consultant in all areas of business arena and a veteran in providing financial advisory, tax consultancy, business restructuring and in adding value for business enhancements possessing experience of well over 45 years, is a fellow member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales and in Sri Lanka as well. He is an International liaison partner of BDO.He will continue as a consultant / adviser with us, and his valuable experience and knowledge gained during the fifty years of his professional career will continue to be available to us. And we are very much dedicated to obtain his service in this regard with as much enthusiasm as it has been before. Mr. Sasanka Rathnaweera appointed as a Partner We are also very pleased to inform you that Mr. Henush Sasanka Rathnaweera, who was associated with our firm for the past several years, will be admitted as a partner from the 1st October, 2009. Mr. Sasanka Rathnaweera has been a live wire of the firm and his commitment to the practice is simply indescribable with comprehensive resourcefulness in the aspects of auditing and assurance and his involvement in extracurricular activities. He is an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka. He has over 8 years experience in providing audit and assurance services in various industries including finance companies, export companies, NGOs, manufacturing companies, cargo and freight handling just to name a few. He also holds an associate membership of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Sri Lanka. He also carried out various international assignments related to the World Bank and the European Union covering both public and private sectors. Passing away of Mr. Wijeratne Siriwardene It is with deep regret that we inform that Mr. Wijeratne Siriwardene, the former Staff Partner of our firm has passed away. His key role in the firm was staff development where he rendered a pioneering service in that department. He had excellent PR skills whereby the staff considered him to be very kindly and understanding.In his illustrative life, he had been a Chartered Accountant for more than fifty years, and it gives us great pride to say that he had spent half of his professional career in developing BDO Partners. He was one of those people whom God has blessed with proper family through whom he must have enjoyed his life to the maximum where it could have helped in his endeavours.In conclusion we would like to express our sincere gratitude for his services and we would always remember him. Sports activities It is quite wonderful to say something about the individuals who are employed in our firm. They actively participate in sports activities and take part in the tournaments conducted by the Practicing Accountants Chartered Students’ Society (PACCS). They are really hungry for success and the partners of the firm also encourage them to perform well, with the intention and foresight that they would apply the same hunger for victory into their studies and their career at length.In the recent Inter Auditors Tournament, we can realize the enormous potential of our boys and girls. 30th National Conference -ICASL 2009 Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse (FCA, MBA), our Managing Partner, was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 30th National Conference, of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka held from the 17th to 19th September-2009, at Waters Edge, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka with the august gathering thus extending the glory of ICASL once again, in Sri Lanka and around the world where the Australian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka participated as the Chief Guest and the Managing Director/CEO of Commercial Bank, Mr. Amitha Goonerathne was the guest of honour of this event.

Saraswathi Pooja A Saraswathi Pooja was held on Friday, 26th September 2009. .................................................................................................. BDO Burah Hathy wishes all its muslim friends a HAPPY EID-UL-FITR Islamic DayThis program was conducted just one week after the Ramadan festival. This program was headed by Siraj (our Assistant Tax Manager) and the organizing part was done by Mrs. Zuhaira. In the program, the Guest was Moulana Fazil Farook, who is a pioneer Islamic Scholar and well versed in the teachings of Islam. The main theme of his speech of around one hour was “Unity in Diversity” from the Islamic perspective. This speech was then followed by a Q&A session where certain aspects and doubts regarding Islam were discussed.The program also included the recitation of the Quran with translations in both English and Sinhalese. Islamic songs, both in Arabic and English, were also performed in chorus to conclude the program. ...................................................................................................................
